Your hiking tour begins with meeting your guide in Kananaskis village. You will then need to drive yourself and your group to the trailhead (just 5 minutes away) to the trailhead where traces of the former mining town remain. Kavach, in the heart of mountainous Kananaskis Country, was a tiny town where the workers and their families from the coal mine once lived.
With your expert guide, you'll hike to the mine scar, where nature has conquered industry, transforming the landscape into a testament of environmental resilience. You'll follow the trail where horses used to haul the coal, to a spectacular viewpoint. Along the way, you’ll spot old mining equipment, abandoned mining shacks, and the remnants of rail ties, used to move coal cars from the mine.
Kovach, though small in size, holds a rich history retold through the remnants of its mining past. You'll get to explore the remnants of old structures and imagine the resilient community that once worked here. Following your guide through the forests, you can imagine miners walking home from a long day in the mine to their homes in Kovach.
The juxtaposition of nature’s resurgence and the echoes of Kovach’s industrial legacy present a captivating anecdote, making this hiking tour not only a physical journey but an ecological and historical exploration.
