Have fun in the great outdoors and learn how to use a bow drill to start a fire using friction from an experienced and qualified wilderness instructor.
Put the ‘Survivor’ in you to the test and make fire using a bow drill and friction.

This forest-to-fire workshop that is designed to upgrade your traditional survival skills by teaching you to create and use your own bow drill kit.

Your instructor will show you how to forage for the necessary raw materials to build your bow drill kit. They will help you pay attention to species and level of decomposition, with the objective of being respectful to the land and following leave no trace ethics.

You will employ some of the basic principles of axe and knife work to create your bow drill from the raw materials you collect.  The instructor will demonstrate the method for using the bow drill to start a fire using friction and assist you in acquiring the skills to start your own fire.

Each participant will:

  • Create their own bow drill kit to take home with them.
  • Learn and practice the technique used to create a coal using a bow drill kit.
  • Create a tinder bundle and learn how to use it to generate a flame from a bow drill coal.
  • Learn to feed and maintain a fire started from a bow drill coal.
  • Learn to identify the trees and materials needed to create a bow drill kit from a forest in the Niagara Region.
  • Throughout the class you will have the opportunity to practice the skills you learn.

When:Available year-round Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays (subject to availability)

Duration:3-hours

Need to know:

  • All equipment and materials are provided.
  • No previous experience is required.
  • Minimum age for participation is 12 years.
  • You will be outdoors for the entire workshop.
  • The course only operates when the temperature is +35C to -10C If the temperature is outside this range, it may need to be rescheduled.
  • Please wear multiple layers in cold weather.
